The Agua Nueva Ranch in Jim Hogg County, Texas, is a historic property with deep roots in the region's Spanish colonial past. Founded in 1742, it is connected to the Spanish land grant known as Agua Nueva de Abajo, awarded to Juan Manuel Ramírez. This grant was part of the Spanish Crown's efforts to encourage settlement and development in the area during the 18th century.
The name "Agua Nueva," meaning "new water," reflects the presence of a spring in the area, which was a significant water source for early settlers and ranchers. Over time, the community of Agua Nueva developed along Farm Road 1017 in southeastern Jim Hogg County, approximately 35 miles south of Hebbronville.
In the early 20th century, the area saw increased settlement and development. In 1903, Sixto García opened a store in the community, and by 1910, a post office was established. The population of Agua Nueva fluctuated over the years, reaching an estimated 200 residents in 1915 and later stabilizing at around 20 residents by the late 20th century.
Regarding ownership, the Agua Nueva Ranch is currently owned by J.L. González. With his sons, both attorneys, Marc A. Gonzalez and Carlos D. Gonzalez, he operates cattle operations, hunting leases and land preservation.
